Frequently asked questions about Sensex
What is the BSE Sensex?
The BSE Sensex (S&P BSE Sensex) is the benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange — a free-float market-cap-weighted index of 30 of the largest and most actively traded Indian companies. It was first published in 1986 with a base value of 100 (set to 1978-79 levels) and is the oldest stock market index in India.
What is the current Sensex level?
The live Sensex level is shown at the top of this page and updates during BSE market hours (09:15 to 15:30 IST, Monday to Friday). Data is pulled directly from Google Finance which mirrors live BSE feeds. For tick-by-tick refresh, the page polls every 15 seconds during market hours.
How is the Sensex calculated?
Sensex is calculated using the free-float market capitalization weighted methodology. Each of the 30 constituent companies contributes to the index proportional to its free-float market cap (total shares × price × free-float factor). The index value is the total free-float market cap of all 30 stocks divided by a base divisor that keeps the value comparable to the 1978-79 base year.
Which stocks are in the Sensex?
The Sensex 30 includes HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, Infosys, Larsen & Toubro, ITC, TCS, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, State Bank of India, Bajaj Finance, Hindustan Unilever, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, Sun Pharma, UltraTech Cement, Titan, NTPC, Power Grid, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Motors, Adani Ports, HCL Technologies, Asian Paints, Tata Steel, Nestle India, Tech Mahindra, IndusInd Bank, and Wipro. The full list with current weights is shown in the table on this page.
What is the difference between Sensex and Nifty?
Sensex tracks 30 BSE-listed companies; Nifty 50 tracks 50 NSE-listed companies. There is roughly 80% overlap in constituents, but Nifty is broader (more sectoral diversity) while Sensex is more concentrated in heavyweights. Day-to-day they move in lockstep; longer term Nifty is the more widely tracked benchmark for institutional flows.
When does Sensex open and close?
Sensex opens at 09:15 AM IST and closes at 03:30 PM IST, Monday to Friday. A 15-minute pre-open session runs from 09:00 to 09:15. BSE also has a closing session from 03:40 to 04:00 PM IST for post-close orders. The exchange is closed on weekends and notified holidays (Republic Day, Mahashivratri, Holi, Good Friday, etc.) — see the official BSE holiday calendar.
Can I trade Sensex options?
Yes. Sensex weekly and monthly options are listed on BSE. Weekly Sensex options expire every Friday and are highly liquid. The current Sensex options lot size is 20.
